Here Comes the Judge...

Wednesday, I was one of the Science Fair Judges at an elementary school in Hialeah (grades 1 to 5). It was quite nice to see students of all backgrounds interested in science. Even though many of them are from families of low economic backgrounds and the parents speak little or no English, I was impressed with their efforts. I had to look past the grammar mistakes (though it did count in assigning points) and look at the actual efforts. Some of the lower level, ESE and younger classes did their projects as class projects. One, about eggs floating, was submitted completely in Spanish.

The experiments ranged from: What type of popcorn pops best? What creates more power: Fruits or Potatoes? What makes an ice cube melt quicker? and Cleaning pennies with juices. My favorite in "The Most Creative Attempt" category was one about singing to plants to make them grow better. The song chosen was "Fergalicious", a solo song by Fergie of the group The Black Eyed Peas. I had to laugh. (By the way, that plant did grow quicker than the one left alone.) Hmm? I wonder what else that song can help grow..........?
The day was long, but the feeling was good after we had chosen the top three projects for each grade level. They will be receiving trophies and ribbons at a ceremony and on the video morning announcements. All participants received Science Fair Participant ribbons. The winners were almost equally divided between boys and girls. I will remain an optimist in the hope for our kids' futures.

Where did the month go?
Wow! We are already in May! Where did the month go?
The weekend came and went really quick. Friday evening was not as calm as I wanted it to be. Did speak to and text Mr. S a bit since we were not getting together that evening. Irma was really congested and was having some breathing distress. I had to use the suction machine and oxygen. I stayed up most of the night observing her. It got better in the morning. I did have some issues. The oxygen machine was not operating correctly, so I had to use the spare oxygen tanks. The equipment company came by Saturday afternoon and all is back to normal now ... Irma is stable again.
Saturday I got to finally meet Mr. S's friend, Nancy. She is great! We hung out a bit then did the 11th Street Diner for breakfast. We nixed the beach idea for the day ..... though Nancy and I did want to go. We kept making fun of Mr. S because he was not enthused about being in the sun that day ... We kept bringing up the possibility of rain, even though it was a clear, sunny and hot day (in the 80's at 11:00 am). We went to the movies and saw the first showing of "Vacancy". We were the only people in the theater for that film.
Later on, we did a little grocery shopping and then hit Twist and The Palace. Tiffany and Geraldine had a good crowd for the show. When we got back, I cooked some meat with chimichurri sauce (garlic, parsley, olive oil and a few spices), white rice and salad. We spent the rest of the evening lounging for a bit and hit the hay early.
Sunday started with a nice breakfast and then we hit the beach. We all got some color and had to comment about the many "pervs" that liked gawking at the bare breasts of women getting some exposure to the sun. Afterwards, we showered, had some wine, changed and hit the rounds again. Ray Rays Latin night was going on. We left at a decent time and had a nice dinner at the Beach BBQ.
Monday morning I went and did an aerobics class with Mr. S. It had been awhile, but I got through and was not too sore in the morning.
Once back at my house, I was in entertainment mode. We have 25 people coming over for Vanessa's graduation from Florida International University. (Dad's god daughter and daughter of good family friends). Most are coming down from Port St. Lucie. Did the shopping with my little sis and got everything prepped and done. So I am set for the onslaught.
The rest of the week I will be in OCD mode. Am one of the judges at an Elementary School Science Fair on Wednesday. Afterwards, going to do some last minute shopping for the Cinco de Mayo party this weekend. Thursday I am taking an accounting test and also doing the stuff to get my teaching certificate. Will not have time to do the Corporate Run, so that is going to free me up a little bit. I do have the ability to say "No" when I need to.
Will be taking a little break from blogging for the rest of the week. Have much to get done at home and with the party coming up .... and I really want to spend some quality time with Mr. S. Have a great week y'all!!

Spring Cleaning and a Ripe Mango

Mom is off to the Diocesan Episcopal Church Women's Convention this weekend, so that means I have to stay home and take care of Irma's medications, feeding, and changing for the next two days. While Mom is gone, I am in my frenzy of Spring Cleaning to keep busy. I really need people out of my way when I get in this mode.
I have already gone through the big shed in the back. For those that do not know, the big shed is built out of concrete with a foundation and electricity. (We are a family of pack rats.) I threw away lots of old elementary, high school and college notebooks and papers, a large collection of old newspapers and bills/statements (shredded), assorted knick knacks and just plain junk. I did find my astronaut GI Joe (missing a left foot), Battle Armour He-Man, The Flying Nun and Osmond's lunch boxes and other assorted games, dolls/action figures and toys. (They get to stay). I packed up and gave away four large trash bags of old clothes and shoes. I gave Mr. S a Bionic Woman book and he was surprised and happy.
My little sis will be here part of the time. I will then be able to get away and see Mr. S and his best friend, Nancy. (She is visiting from New Jersey and came down to see him and check me out.) We are going to get together on Saturday.
The mango tree has made a recovery. It is/was Dad's pride and joy. Last year it was still in shock after the hurricane damage, but this year it is bearing fruit. The fruit is not as large as in previous years, but it is better than nothing. They are still sweet and ripen quickly. Stephanie was here during the week, so we picked some of the ripe ones.
It's supposed to be in the 80's here this weekend. Maybe we'll hit a movie to stay cool. Enjoy your weekend!

Good Luck Jay!!
Jay a.k.a Stanley is leaving us for the state of Georgia. I got to spend some time with him this week at a little gathering at Larry and David's place. In the small world we live in, it ended up that my friend, Aixa, was the human resources person at the Manderin when he was hired as a Chef. They both have only good things to say about each other.
Jay has been a good friend. He has always given me strait forward and honest impressions and advice. We have had laughs, conversations, tears, and the occasional debate. I know we are going to keep in touch, but his presence will be missed.
Some of the snowbirds that were down for the season were also at the gathering. They are also headed back North. They take with them many stories and some new friendships. I wish them all safe travel.

We still have a ways to go .....
The last weekend was most of what I expected. Friday had a quick stop for Raul's birthday at Twist with Mr. S before going to the Mainland for dinner. Only in Miami can you find a Colombian restaurant decorated from top to bottom and side to side with plastic flowers and foliage. (Note: pineapples do not grow upside down from trees.) Even the men's room looked like a cheap background from an old Tarzan movie. We had a good meal.
I was debating with myself about blogging about the rest of the evening, but since I think it is important to state, I am doing so. It might be a little rough around the edges, but here it goes.
The Colombian restaurant is in Miami and on the weekends there is live music and dancing. Mr. S and I were the only same sex couple at the dinner. There were 13 of us, including 2 married couples, my sister, a married woman whose husband could not make it and the single girls. All the children were left with babysitters for the evening. The wait staff was attentive and the conversation was light and lively. Near the end of the evening (after we had already finished our meals and were getting ready to pay) I went to the washroom. I was followed in by a doorman and was told (in Spanish) that this a family restaurant and to tone it down and that we were not appreciated there. Upon leaving the restroom, I immediately asked to see the manager who backed up the doorman! I was in shock. Mr. S. and I sat next to each other during dinner and it was quite a "G" evening without any public display of affection (Though we did hold hands under the table a couple of times.)
I asked the manager what was wrong. He said (again the conversation was in Spanish) that people had complained. I asked about what and to point out who. He could not answer. He said that it was a family establishment. I told him I was there with my family. He also said that they have the right to deny service. I said it was too late after we had already been there for two hours, ate a complete meal and had left a large tip. Mr. S and I exited immediately.
The group at the table also became offended and came to our defense immediately and actually did call "The Miami Herald". I then took a breath and asked for the manager again at the front door. I guess I was fishing for an apology that was not to come. I told him that: 1. It was completely inappropriate and offensive the way the door guy followed me into the bathroom and made the statement 2. If something inappropriate or offensive was perceived, he should have pointed it out right away 3. He could not state what was inappropriate or offensive or to whom 4. It was insulting the way we were treated and that 5. It was very convenient the way they waited until after we were done and paid that they made their comments.
I live on the mainland. To those who do not, and have gotten used to the safety and openness of other areas, be aware .... closed minds still exist. I have drafted a letter to some publications, local groups and to the owner of the establishment about the experience (having it proofed by some of the group for accuracy and content).
The optimist in me still thinks people can change, but sometimes you are dealt a blow that sets you back a bit. The night was not all wasted. We did have a good time together as a group. I know I have family and friends that accept me and stand up for me and those I care for. The group ended the evening at Ana's house and Mr. S. and I had a quiet evening.
THE GOOD THINGS: Saturday, Mr. S. and I got to "loaf" for a bit with lots of food, a couch and TV. In the afternoon we met up with friends and we got together with Provincetown Jerry and her friends at the Palace. It was really great to see her.
Sunday was the Miami Aids Walk. My optimism got a boost seeing the families, college students, dogs, etc come out. I was also glad to see, and catch up with, the Florida legend and icon Ms. Tiffany Arieagus. She is working for Care Resource. Twist and the Palace had water for the walkers and "The" Mrs Astor was up bright and early to support the whole thing.
Oh! I left my camera in my sis's car so not too many new pics.
Until later ......... Pray for those who have not learned about inclusion and tolerance ....

Busy, Busy, Busy...
Mr. S. said that I tire him out because I like doing things. He also realizes that most of the time it is of a charitable nature or for friends and family. I have cut down a bit. I have decided not to volunteer for the Film Festival. I have other commitments. The newest one is that I will be a Science Fair judge at an elementary school next Wednesday (will blog on that later).
Event Full weekend. Friday Mr. S and I are going to a birthday party for one of his friends early in the evening, then head to the mainland to have dinner with "my girls" and other friends for Carlely's and Poneh's birthday. It will be at "Pueblito Viejo" (a Columbian restaurant with live music). I'm sure it will be fun.
Provincetown Jerry is in town with some of her friends from Provincetown and Austin, so we are meeting up at the Palace on Saturday with some of our local crew. I am looking forward to seeing her. If there is time and we are up to it, we might go to the Florida Gay Men's Chorus concert at All Soul's Episcopal Church Hall at 8:00 pm (www.miamigaychorus.org). They will be doing a Cabaret style evening of standards called 'The Night They Invented Champagne".
Sunday is the Aids Walk Miami (www.aidswalkmiami.org). Mr. S, Tara, and I are participating and I'm sure we will see people we know. Registration is open. If you decide to register the day of the event, you will need to give a minimum donation of $25.00 to participate. Some of the local bars, clubs and organizations will be volunteering along the route for support and supply water for participants.
Later in the day, I have a meeting at "Taverna Opa" (Hollywood Beach) regarding the Diocesan Acolyte Festival, Youth Convention and some future events. Not sure how that will go, since it does get loud in there. Afterwards, Mr. S. and I are planning a quiet evening to round off the weekend.

Can you keep secret or stop a rumor?
This past Tuesday there was a surprise party held for "The" Mrs Astor. It went off really well. I was impressed that all those that were invited, had a part of or just knew about it kept the surprise well hidden. It is rare sometimes to keep good surprises from friends.
Mr. S. and I were at the party and I assisted a bit by forwarding the invitation to others, receiving the phone call that the Limo had arrived at Twist and letting the guests know, cutting cake, and handling the spotlight for the show. While doing this, it seems someone decided to bend Mr. S's ear with rumors about me. What were they thinking? Mr. S. and I have been talking about everything and have been open about our pasts (plus the fact that we have had "the talk" and are being exclusive). The tale the person told him made me laugh and angry at the same time(Did they think he wouldn't ask me?). The facts were wrong and Mr. S. said he took it with a "grain of salt" (he was considering his source). I do tell people if you have any questions or have anything to say about me, please check your sources, or at least ask me directly. Cowards!!
There are some people that do not like seeing others happy or in a relationship. It is one of the sad things about our times. As for me, I would like to support people in their choices and let them create their own rules of how they will be. If you do not want to be the object of rumor, then do not spread them yourself.
As for the person who started me on this little tirade, I do have a calendar and know dates and places and your story did not hold any water. It only made me angry. Have the courage to speak to me first and ask for the facts (or at least my side). It really does not matter if you are spreading misinformation to others, if they know me, they can judge for themselves by my actual words and actions if it is true. Also, I am social enough to have witnesses as to my whereabouts. When you get the person that I am seeing involved, then that is another story....
I know rumors and secrets are exciting and give some people a sense of excitement or control, but please do not use it to harm others. Ask yourself: What is the purpose? What good will come of it? Am I hurting others or myself? What are the actual facts? How reliable is my source? It is so much easier to speak about others when there is nothing about yourself to speak of....
Well... Mr. S and I are happy, I will continue to be the optimist, I do speak to everyone and none of this is changing any time soon....and that is fact, not rumor....you heard it here first.

April Birthdays
Happy April Birthdays!
Today is the birthday of the fantabulous "The" Mrs. Astor.
I wish you many blessings along with all the love and respect of friendship and family that you so rightly deserve.
I also want to wish Poneh and Carlely (my lovely and vivacious ladies) a great birthday. We will be celebrating both your birthdays on Friday at a nice Columbian Restaurant with music and fun in the Kendall area.
To all others celebrating April birthdays: Enjoy and Celebrate!

Recovery Weekend
This last weekend was quite nice and relaxing, though I did have a funeral service on Saturday.
Friday, I found myself making the program for Vicky de los Santos funeral service. Our rector was on a clergy/spouse cruise and could not be contacted. So, with Bishop Hernandez and Rev. Garcia, the service was planned and organized. The family had asked my mom and I to handle it for them. Friday evening I cooked for Mr. S and we spent a nice night in with a quick stop at Twist.
Saturday, I was very happy that Mr. S accompanied me to the funeral service (He told me "that's what boyfriends do"). We started the day with breakfast at the 11th Street Diner. We then went back and did our first costume change of the day. Vicky is being cremated, so the burial service will be at another time. The body was being brought to the church for this service. Mr. S got to see me in moderate OCD mode. As soon as I walked into the church, I began to fix things, move things and direct. I really wanted everything just right. When my mom arrived she took over as an usher and directing the guests.
I picked the readers ( I was one of them) and I was also a chalice bearer. Mr. S said it felt a little odd for him receiving communion from me. The service was, of course, in Spanish. I did translate some things for him and he recognized some of the hymns that were used. The service was simple and lasted about an hour. The family was appreciative and I am glad I was able to make things nice for my friend. Before I left the church, I did leave a picture of Vicky by votive candles near the alter.
My mom was impressed with Mr. S. We were both in suit and tie and she asked if we were going to a concert. We laughed. She also liked that he agreed with her that the organist played and sang a little too loud.
Once we were back on the beach, we did our next costume change, had a quick lunch and headed over to socialize at Twist. From there we went to the Palace to catch Tiffany and Geraldine. Mr. S. got to meet one of my long time friends, Noel, and his partner. (I have known Noel and his brother since Tampa 1987.) The weather was nice and the Volleyball tournament and Polo Tournament were in town, but there was still a nice crowd.
We ended early and spent the rest of the weekend lounging. We caught up on episodes of The Tudors, Weeds, Arrested Development and watched Capote. There was a lot of food involved, including a Sunday breakfast trip to News Cafe and an afternoon trip to Ben and Jerry's. It was nice to hang, eat, talk, relax. The windy and rainy day did help in making it a bit romantic and conducive to lounging. It did give me that energy boost, that all of us should get once in awhile, to start off the week.
I hope those of you in the North are doing okay and are safe with the weather you have received this weekend. Peace.

Anna Karenina - The Opera
The Florida Grand Opera is presenting the premiere of Anna Karenina starting April 28, 2007 at the Carnival Center. It is a new work by American composer David Carlson. There are previews and sound clips at http://www.fgo.org/.
Tolstoy's story has Anna trying to follow her heart within the constraints of Russian Society in the 19th Century. She, along with everyone she loves, is overwhelmed by terrible choices she is forced to make and live with the bitter consequences. This leads to a bitter and tragic conclusion.
The title role is being played by American soprano Kelly Kaduce (www.kellykaduce.com). She is stunningly beautiful and has previously performed for the Florida Grand Opera, The Boston Lyric Opera, The Opera Theater of St. Louis and was the winner of a Metropolitan Opera National Competition in 1999.
The sounds, costumes and sets are said to be lavish and able to evoke the feeling of Russia in that time period. Hopefully it is true. Though this is a new piece and I know the story and how it ends, love stories and tragedies have not been a draw for me this year.
This is the 11th new work being presented at the Carnival Center. Though I praise their ambition and wanting to give Miami a grand cultural center, I think they need to focus on some of the other issues plaguing the Center (lighting, safety, parking, budget, attendance).

Vicky De Los Santos
Today my friend and co-Sunday School Teacher, Vicky, passed away. Her family is in the process of making arrangements. Most likely there will be a wake on Friday evening and the funeral on Saturday with a service at Todos Los Santos Episcopal Church.
She was older and she always appreciated our conversations and friendship. We did many things together for the children and parents of the congregation. She has been missed during her illness (cancer). Now, she will really be missed....
I am sad and mourn losing a friend, but am grateful to have known her and celebrate her life.

...actions and words....
I was very complimented this week by friends and co-workers that said that my words and actions go together. I did not think this was a difficult thing for people to do. I try to follow up with what I say I am going to do. I guess it's part of being an adult.
Some of this came from the amount of commitments I have made for the next few weeks. I do invite others to join me, but time management isn't a strong point for some people. Also, I do prepare for things in advance (sometimes way too far). The family responsibilities sometimes get in the way, that is why I need to plan ahead. I am also in a relationship that I enjoy, am thankful for and want to nurture.
I guess I do want to be an "authentic" person....doing things for my family, friends, and the community are part of that. Along the way, I do take time to care for myself.... I have been eating healthier (no, I have not cut out the fried food), exercising, getting adequate rest, having meditation/quiet time and still have time for the social/friends time. It does make my mind a little clearer and been keeping me more in perspective recently. Some have told me I look thinner, but I have gained weight and muscle.
Coming up this month is the Aids Walk Miami, Youth Commission Meeting, Acolyte Festival Post Meeting and Dinner, Miami Gay Lesbian Film Festival (I am a volunteer), 3 friend's birthdays, and other work and church things.
A hint for some of you: It is not a bad thing and it does not make you a bad person if you say "No" to a request for a commitment of your time. It is better than not following through.

My different worlds met and didn't collide ...

Was a great, sunny South Florida day. Cliff and Doug had snow in Columbus, Ohio, so I guess it makes up for not having a white Christmas. Nicholas had flurries in Brookfield, Wisconsin, but was happy with the three baskets he received from the Easter Bunny.
Mr. S enjoyed the Chicken Piccata, Fresh Vegetables and Rice Pilaf I made for him on Friday. We spent the evening in watching the History Channel. We had a great, full day on Saturday. It ranged from having a full homemade breakfast, Ice Cream on Lincoln Road, going to the movies, meeting up with friends, doing a little shopping, and going to the Palace to support the Prideline fundraiser. In the quiet time, we did continue "the talk" and we have decided to use the "B" word (boyfriend). It's been 5 weeks, so we are going forward. We do see potential and we are being exclusive.
Sunday, Mr. S came to church with me and my family. The service was in Spanish, but I brought an English Book of Common Prayer and translated when I could. I was a little embarrassed....I forgot to turn off my cell phone and it went off during the service. Second, my Mom lost an ear ring and the priest had to ask the congregation "who lost this ear ring?" Mom was bossy and made him get up when they asked for those who were there for the first time to stand up and be recognized. Of course, everyone was friendly and the service ended with an un-traditional Christian salsa song.
To continue the day, we stopped at Sedano's Supermarket to pick up some last minute items, then went to the house and had a great family lunch. Dr. and Mrs O'Neill (Cliff's parents), Alexandra, Poneh, Mom and Sis were there. I know he was a little nervous, but he was a hit and I'm glad that he was included in everything (sis and mom put him to work). Everyone did some part in preparing the meal or setting the table. Mr. S made a bread pudding with a whiskey sauce that was spectacular! It flew!
My sis took the liberty of bringing out the old photo albums, so Poneh and Mr. S had a laugh seeing my many looks from childhood to present. The consensus was that I not grow back my facial hair.... It was so nice to share the family memories and history. I am very proud that my house is always an open and welcoming place for everyone.
Poneh drove her little Yaris. Very cute. She is very happy to be more mobile.
Sis and I took Mr. S home, but the day did not end there. When we got back, Cristina and Stephanie were there. We ate again. Then my Mom's god daughter and her "husband" showed up with 2 out of 4 kids (Jeffrey Luis and Jesus). We watched 'The Sound of Music" and played with the variety of percussion instruments that we have in a basket in the living room (maracas, palo, guiro, tambourines, bells). They had their fill of chocolate and cake and were happy with the stuffed animals they received (chick with bunny ears). (All kids received the same thing in different colors.)
All in all, it was a full and very pleasant weekend. I am soooooo happy that everyone liked Mr. S. and that he had a good time. Mom told him to come back ... I know he will be. Next up on our meeting family and friends is my meeting Nancy, Mr S's best friend from Boston. She will be here at the end of the month.
To end, when I told Mr. S. that I was very glad that he came over to my house, he said " You don't have a house, you have a home..." I smiled and almost got a tear..... Not everyone is so fortunate, so if you are, please open up to those who do not ....
Peace.

... another weekend ...
Well, it is Good Friday (for those of you who are not Christian, it is the day we recognize as the day of the Crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ.) My personal meditations started on Thursday and have been fasting since then, which will end at sundown today. (It's my own personal thing.)
And as luck would have it, I am cooking for Mr. S at his place tonight. (He's cooked for me the last two Fridays.) On Saturday we are going to see "GrindHouse" then go to the Palace to support Miss Tiffany Fantasia Phillips and guests in a fundraiser for Prideline. It is a good organization that assists and supports LGBT Youth.
Sunday is Easter (the day we recognize as the Resurrection of Jesus Christ) and Mr. S is going to church with me and then back to my house for the family and family friends Easter Lunch. We are making a version of 'Asopado de Mariscos" (we are making a thick yellow rice soup with shrimp, scallops and lobster). It is the first time he is going to meet my mom and sis face to face. So, as some that know me can guess, I have been in hyper OCD mode. I have been up late cleaning and I went overboard and pulled everything out of the closets. Needless to say, I have been spending more time putting things back. The good thing is that I de-cluttered a bit and got rid of a bunch of clothes and stuff we do not need or use anymore. (It is all gone to people that need or could use them .... I only threw away unusable items.) I guess cleaning can be meditative it did fall into the right time and Easter is a time of renewal.
To all: Unless something special comes up, I probably won't post again until the end of the weekend. HAVE A BLESSED WEEKEND!

Nigeria'a Anti-Gay Bill - SPEAK UP!!!
Nigeria's Anti-Gay Bill Causes Protests
From: afrol News (www.afrolnews.com)
March 1, 2007
Human rights and gay activists until now have kept a low profile regarding the attempt by Nigerian lawmakers to promote Africa's most draconic bill limiting the rights of sexual minorities. They did not want to give the promoters publicity. But now, as lawmakers are getting serious on the bill, a wave of protests is reaching Nigeria.
The controversial bill, entitled the "Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act", would imprison anyone who speaks out or forms a group supporting lesbian and gay people's rights, and would silence virtually any public discussion or visibility around lesbian and gay lives in Nigeria. In its last published version, the draconian bill would impose a five-year prison sentence on anyone who "goes through the ceremony of marriage with a person of the same sex." Anyone, including a priest or cleric, who "performs, witnesses, aids or abets the ceremony of same sex marriage," would face the same sentence. But the bill goes even beyond that to punish any positive representation of or advocacy for the rights of Nigeria's lesbians and gays. Anyone "involved in the registration of gay clubs, societies and organisations, sustenance, procession or meetings, publicity and public show of same sex amorous relationship directly or indirectly in public and in private," would be subject to the same sentence.
The legislation was first introduced in January 2006 by Nigeria's Minister of Justice, Bayo Ojo. But it has been lying dormant for months in the National Assembly as Nigerian politicians are gearing up for nationwide elections in April this year. Human rights and gay activists in Nigeria during last year kept a remarkable low profile on the bill, although knowing it could seriously change the climate in the country. Their strategy proved to be wise. Without loud protest action from the gay community, the bill would get little attention in global and national media, making politicians lose their interest as personal conflicts were bound to surface ahead of this year's elections.
In January this year, the silence was broken. The prominent British gay activist Peter Tatchell and his group OutRage! suddenly launched an international appeal to human rights groups worldwide "to take urgent action to press the Nigerian government to uphold international human rights law and to drop this draconian legislation."
The silence was broken. And the dead-believed bill suddenly resurfaced from Nigerian lawmakers' drawers. African gay rights groups were furious. "Stay out of African Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex (LGBTI) issues," several prominent activists wrote to Mr Tatchell. "You have proven that you have no respect for conveying the truth with regards to Africa or consulting African LGBTI leaders before carrying out campaigns that have severe consequences in our countries. You have betrayed our trust over and over again," the letter went on.

Here piggie, piggie!
Tara (who is Armenian) and I kept saying that the best part of the roast is the crispy skin. She did then take it upon herself to start chewing on the pig head. (Who says you can't have fun with a bunch of straight people).
Mr. S and I were courted to go scuba diving some time. His answer was " I haven't dived since college...." It's a very tempting offer and the whole group was great. I was more of the social one and we were the only "alternative" couple there. Some of the pictures I took might end up in their newsletter.
In other news:
Poneh got to meet Mr. S and"The" Mrs. Astor. It ends up that Mrs. Astor and Poneh share the same birthdate (April 17). She was also very happy to get her first parking ticket. (She just purchased a Yaris.)
Invitations are going out for the "Disco de Mayo"and planning is in full swing. The Palace will most likely be using the logo I came up with for the invitations and the event.
Mr. S and I had a great weekend together. I recommend the new Macy Gray Album to everyone.

Patrick update
Seems like Patrick's been really busy. He was at the 'Reign On Me" premiere in New York with his mom on March 20, and last night (Thursday, March 29, 2007) he was featured on "Access Hollywood". You can see links to some of the other news items and photos with the stars (Will Smith, Adam Sandler, Howie Mandell, etc) on his website.
They are still getting prepared to begin their cross country trip in May.

Lady Bunny

Lady Bunny performed at Twist on South Beach last night. I was going to go home early after a sociable afternoon and a morning of errands, but then got caught up in the whirlwind of seeing Larry and David and just went with it. I felt like I was being passed on from one person to another. I had some good conversations with the boys and did sternly state to an admirer that my eyes are only focused on one person (and he was not there..he had a long day at work).
"The" Mrs. Astor and Mr. Riley looked like they had a great time. It is good to see people enjoy themselves without any distractions. As Mrs Astor stated today: "What a night; and I didn't even feel pain today."
The show is all that you would expect from Lady Bunny. Sharp tongue, wit and comments that would make the devil blush. No one was exempt and no topic was taboo. It was gracious for Adora to share her one night. No wigs were flying, but there was a noticeable bit of competition for the spotlight. It was what it was...a night of laughter and entertainment with an appreciative crowd.

Laugh or cry?
Had a very confusing day today. Guess it is emotional overload. Had a great evening with Mr. S (going on 3 weeks). We are planning a good weekend (pig roast, a fund raiser and a birthday party) and he might actually come to church with me and the family for Easter(April 7).
Stopped to see Ditmar at Score where I saw B&T Mark from his self imposed distance (of course he continues to ignore my existence; and I quote directly from him"I want no further contact with you.") and I felt sad because there were friends there (as there have been the last last few times I've seen him) that we could have been sharing time with at the same time, but that is not to be. I am not in Jr. High anymore. (Don't know what he needs to get over it, but it needs to happen.) My feelings for him are gone, but the sadness of the loss is still there. This is the last time he will be mentioned in this forum.
Skipped the "Martini Tuesday" (was hoping to see "The" Mrs Astor). Was at a great location, but too late for me tonight.
I received an e-mail from Ian. He made a statement on his blog (El Mundo de Ian) about me (Spanish section). I had reminded him (in Spanish) that I had thought about him and that he is still on my prayer list. It gave me a smile and a tear. The duality of changing relationships and circumstances, especially when there is a lot of emotion attached, is always difficult. "...y esos momentos quedarán guardados en mi corazón... el único lugar en donde todos los que amo conviven sin "limitaciones lingüÃsticas" ni distancias..." TRANSLATION:" ...and all those moments will be saved in my heart...the only place where all those I love can coexist without limitations in linguistics or distance..."
Aaaaaaand, spoke to Maria (who is on her way back to Boston tomorrow). She has not been back since the death of her mom last week. She has had my ear every day. She has called me multiple times daily, at all hours, and I keep telling her it is "OK". Friends do that and mean it.
This is not considering the home front. Irma has her Doctor's appointment on Thursday. (The ambulance is already confirmed.) We received all our insurance premium invoices (car, house, life, health, etc) at the same time. Gladys is leaving on a spring break trip. One of the home care workers is out of town. Two of Mom's lifelong friends have become widows in the last week. Am I complaining or venting?

The good stuff:
- Weekend with Mr. S.
- Meeting the Jonnie's to plan the "Disco de Mayo".
- Shopping/Lauderdale trip with Ditmar.
- Palm Sunday (April 1).
- Signed up to volunteer at the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival
- Training for the Aids Walk/Run in April
- Training for the Corporate Run on May 3 (Barcardi Team)
Continue to count your blessings and pray for those who have lost their ability to do so. 'til later..Peace......

Juan and Crista
Congratulations, Juan and Crista on your marriage!! I have known Juan since he was 5 years old... He has always been completely dedicated to those he loves and cares about (family and friends). I am so happy that he found a partner that is equally dedicated.
The wedding was simple, personal and a little emotional (His mom has passed away and they had a little remembrance for her...but her presence was definitely there). The reception was held at Smith and Wollensky's on South Beach. Everything was elegant. I was pleased to have some fun time with my mom and sis. It was also a relief to be with adults in a nice setting with wine, good food and a live jazz band (no Winter Music Conference or Spring Break BOOM BOOM music). Their song was "At Last".
I wish them both much happiness and many blessings!

New Outlooks
Seems like several friends, family members and acquaintances have been going through changes this last month (be it in career, health, family, relationships, faith, travel, etc) . New outlooks are good...change can be good. I try to look at the optimistic side and the positive that may come out of it.
There are some people that prefer to hold on to grudges, anger, hurt or hard feelings and not discuss them or let them go. Some may say it is a sign of immaturity, but I think some people just do not know how to express themselves. This seems to affect those around them and I can no longer deal with that kind of negative energy, so have let these people go and hope that they can find resolution, peace, someone to talk to and support (if they have not already done so). I wish them well and the hand of friendship and an ear is always there if they choose to take it. I do not think anyone has so many friends, that they can easily discard some and keep others.
I have had a different smile on my face the last two weeks (and actually blushed when asked). Was introduced to a nice person by mutual friends and we have been seeing each other. Taking it slow, but I have been more forward and intentional about being vocal about what I want and finding out what they want. We have friends in common and they have inquired about the nature of our relationship.....for now, my answer is that I am dating someone exclusively and we are seeing where it goes from there. (Though, we have already made some plans to be together at some friend's and family events the next two months.) This Friday we are, so far, planning to stay in.....he's cooking dinner for me! We also have plans to go out dancing one night...
Other news. The "Disco de Mayo" party I am planning for my sis and the 40's girls is going forward. It will be a celebration of life, family and friendship. Have made the initial catering plans with J & J Catering and Event Design (786.385.2838). Otherwise known as the Jonnie's.
Ending this post by stating that I will continue to pray for those on my list in need of support, healing, strength and guidance. (If there is anyone you would like me to add, let me know. I will be happy to do so.)
Peace.

Peace.

Black Snake Moan

Saw this film on Wednesday. If you like a story about redemption with a sound track of blues, jazz and gospel, this is for you. Don't let the poster confuse you. Yes, there is violence and sexual overtones, but they are actually a part of the story. I was surprisingly impressed by Justin Timberlake, but Christina Ricci and Samuel L. Jackson(He plays guitar and sings) are the driving force of the film. I won't give away plot and story, but I do like the idea that you have to live your life and that you can not change people, they need to find that in themselves.

Another week has come and gone. It's been a nice sunny week with one day of rain. The Spring Breakers are in town and Miami is getting ready for another Winter Music Conference.
Actually, this week was full of some trauma, drama, etc. Some people getting over various ills and colds, Ditmar is no longer at the Palace and is now at Score. The Jonnie's dog passed away. Maria A.'s mom passed away. Miss T. was in a traffic accident. Some of my church ladies are in the hospital. etc, etc, etc. Good news is that I've been seeing someone for the last few weeks and we'll see where it goes....
This week is going to be busy. Have a date on Tuesday, maybe do 1/2 a beach day to take advantage of the sun, going to see "La Cage Aux Folles - The Musical" at the Coral Gables Actor's Playhouse, then later in the week "Wicked" at the Carnival Center. Saturday I have two weddings and Sunday is the Celebrity Run - 5k (to benefit the homeless). I'm still trying to be a well rounded person, so let's see how it goes. Another good thing is that at least I've kept up with a couple of my resolutions for the year.
A Happy Birthday to Ray Ray....

Driving For Donors - Patrick
Patrick is the son of my next door neighbor, Willy. I have known Willy for, at least, 30 years. They were the third Hispanic family to move into the predominantly Anglo neighborhood when we were young. Willy is a police officer and a really good guy. I often help his mom out. It is like having another mom next door.
Patrick is 11 years old. He was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in March 2006. This diagnosis came after a long, painful year of suffering from what, then, was thought Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. The pain and swelling in his joints got so bad that he was in a wheelchair for 5 months because he was unable to walk a single step. When the pain got worse and he had a fever that wouldn't go away the doctors put him in the hospital where they found out that he really has Leukemia. He is undergoing chemotherapy treatments at St. Josephs Children's Hospital in Tampa, Florida. He is almost done with the first year of intense chemo (he goes 3 times a week for treatments!) Then, he will have 2 1/2 more years of maintenance chemotherapy.
After having a friend die because they were not able to find a bone marrow match, Patrick came up with the idea for a bone marrow drive (with a focus on recruiting minority donors). DRIVING FOR DONORS is a nationwide event where Patrick and his family will travel across the country in a special "Donormobile" (The vehicle has already been donated) . They will work with The National Marrow Donor Program, The Marrow Foundation, law enforcement departments, local donor centers and businesses and the media to host successful donor drives in over 30 major cities! The goal is to add 2007 new donors to the National Marrow Registry in 2007 and in order to do that they must raise over $100,000 for Tissue Typing fees alone! DRIVING FOR DONORS will be the first National Law Enforcement Donor Drive!
DRIVING FOR DONORS will begin on May 5th, 2007 and continue for 3 months. They will hold donor drives in major cities such as Miami, Orlando, Atlanta, Dallas, Washington D.C, New York, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Denver, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix and more!
They really need your help!

Hope for the weekend

In the whirlwind of Winter Party events, visitors from out of town and the distractions of the week, it's good to get a little sanity today. I was at the Diocesan Acolyte Festival. I volunteered to do two storytelling workshops for the 3rd grade and under group. In all had about 45 kids and a few adults attend my workshop. The story I told was "Hope for the Flowers" by Trina Paulus. I first read it in 1981 and it's been told to many children and adults over the years. Today was a bit significant because it seemed to speak to me again. Hope and optimism is always a good thing.
The day refocused me. Interacting with the kids and running into some familiar faces from the past reminded me of the lives one touches without knowing of the effects. I was surprised and glad to hear of the positive things I have done without really trying or knowing.....it was all just part of what I do naturally. You do what is right and true, then move on.
Tonight is the 40's Birthday's Wine Tasting Party. It will be a nice evening. The hostess did get a DJ and I'll be bringing some "lounge music". Will blog about it if it is more interesting. Sunday will be a little madness. It is the Winter Party Beach Event. Friends are attending, but most likely will meet up with them after the event. Have things to do during the day. Hopefully meet up with the Jonnies and Fadel.
Am glad to hear that some of the people that have been having medical issues are doing a little better. They remain on my prayer list.
Until later, remember 'We can fly! We can become butterflies!"
